As 2025 unfolds, the field of dermatology is set for some significant advancements. To get a glimpse of what’s ahead, we turned to our esteemed Expert Faculty members, who shared their expert insights on what they think will be the key innovations shaping this year. From the most exciting trends of 2024 that are gaining momentum to the next breakthroughs poised to redefine patient care, here’s what they had to say.
1. Continued innovation in prevalent conditions
Dr Raj Chovatiya, Professor of Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University Chicago Medical School and Founder and Director of the Center for Medical Dermatology and Immunology Research in Chicago, Illinois, USA:
“Throughout 2024, we saw a surge in new and emerging approaches to treating prevalent diseases, and this trend is set to continue in 2025. Last year, atopic dermatitis and hidradenitis suppurativa were at the forefront of discussions. While we anticipate further updates in these areas over the coming months, expect innovations in chronic hand eczema, vitiligo and psoriasis to take centre stage—there’s still more happening!”
2. Increased awareness of emerging skin diseases
Prof. Roberto Arenas, Professor of Dermatology and Mycology. University of Mexico, Mexico:
“Traveller dermatology has emerged as a result of globalization and increased travel for tourism and business. With human migration on the rise worldwide, we are seeing a significant impact on the spread of diseases.
In dermatology, over the coming year, I anticipate that we will continue to encounter new or previously unknown conditions on a global scale. For example, with increasing global travel and migration, emerging and re-emerging skin diseases are now being identified in non-endemic regions, highlighting the need for heightened awareness and adaptability in addressing these evolving challenges this year and in the years ahead.”
3. Diagnosis driven by GenAI and super-high magnification dermoscopy
Prof. Feroze Kaliyadan, Professor of Dermatology, Sree Narayana Institute of Medical Sciences, Chalakka, Ernakulam, Kerala, India
“One of the most interesting trends in 2024 was the increased research into the use of optical super high magnification dermoscopy in dermatological diagnosis. By providing high-resolution images, it enables clinicians to detect minute details often missed with conventional dermoscopy. Though primarily used in the area of skin tumors like melanoma at present, this technique has the potential to revolutionize diagnosis in general dermatology in the coming years.
Looking ahead to 2025, the combination of optical super-high magnification dermoscopy with generative AI will likely create waves in dermatological diagnosis. This integration holds immense potential for advancing the field. While challenges remain, the benefits are undeniable, promising a brighter future for dermatology and patient care.”
4. Expanding horizons in urticaria care
Dr Luis Ensina (Division of Allergy, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, Federal University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil):
“In 2024, we witnessed the growing importance of having an app to help patients monitor their disease and share their results with their doctors. The CRUSE app continues to expand and is now available in 29 countries—and counting.
This year also brought significant new publications, including results from phase 2 and 3 trials on novel biologics and small molecules for chronic urticaria. Many of these studies were authored or co-authored by Prof. Marcus Maurer, who sadly passed away in July. However, his legacy lives on, as was evident during the Global Urticaria Forum and the Consensus Guideline Meeting in December in Berlin.
Looking ahead to 2025, the UCARE network will continue its expansion, and we are eager to see the publication of the updated guideline, incorporating the latest data and a new treatment algorithm.”
As our expert perspectives reveal, 2025 is set to be another transformative year for dermatology. But this is just the beginning. Please do stay connected with us for the latest breakthroughs, expert insights and analysis of what’s shaping the future of dermatology.
